Review

Previously, when it was the Ashley Arms, I heard bad things about it and avoided it at all costs. It’s just off the Gloucester Road, near the cricket ground, and unless you knew it existed, then you wouldn’t necessarily stumble upon it.

Since then, the Ashley Arms is no more and it is now owned by the guys behind The Pipe & Slippers and The Windmill pubs. Like it’s sister pubs, the emphasis is on a chilled but a modern pub feel, with a good selection of not just your average drinks, but good local drinks too.

When I visited, the weather wasn’t brilliant, so I didn’t get to sample the garden. However, it looks like a really nice place to chill, if we ever get some summer sun!

I would say the food wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t say it blew my socks off either. It is proper pub food with a slight fancy posh touch to it. I had the pie, mash, gravy and mushy peas and it worked a treat and filled a gap. As for the drinks, it looks to have a couple of decent ciders on tap at all times and a nice few bottles.

I’ll certainly be popping on over there more when the footie seasons kicks off again, as it is close enough to the ground for a quick drink before/after the game.
