Further Information:

Transition Portishead has teamed up with Avon Wildlife Trust, Portishead in Bloom, Portishead Lions and Harbourside WI to organise the event which takes place at the Trust’s nature reserve situated behind Weston-in-Gordano parish church.

Local people are invited to get involved in the harvest and enjoy a day out for all the family in the lovely surroundings of the Gordano Valley. As well as harvesting nearly 100 apple trees and converting the harvest into juice using apple presses there will be lots of activities for young and old alike. Locally made apple presses will be on sale with advice on how to use them. And there will be lots of apple themed activities for children.

The event takes place in the orchard planted by the Avon Wildlife Trust 10 years ago where the apples will be harvested. The apple crop is not so good this year so we are inviting people to bring their own apples to be pressed as well. They will need to bring a clean bucket to collect the apples and plenty of washed bottles to take their juice home in. Any apple juice collected will be free to take away and should be pasteurised if it is to be kept as juice or turned into cider.

Home made apple cakes and fresh apple juice and other refreshments will be available in the orchard.

There will be a display about the Weston Clevedon and Portishead Railway, the route of which runs through the event. A length of the original rails are still visible.

It promises to be a great day out for all the family so come along and tell your family and friends to come along too!

This will be our third apple harvest and even heavy rain last year couldn’t keep the harvesters away. We have purchased a new larger apple press and electric crusher to increase our capacity to convert the apples into delicious juice.

This year we are holding the event to coincide with the harvest festival service at St Peter and St Paul’s in Weston-in-Gordano which is at 10:00. There will be a harvest lunch in the village hall following the service and if you want to attend please contact Patrick Chevasse.

Weston Moor Nature Reserve is in the village of Weston in Gordano half way between Portishead and Clevedon on the B3124. Access to the reserve is down the lane next to the church and car parking is available behind the church.
