After a tough day at work, having no water supply at all at home whilst the incompetent Bristol Water attempt to do some planned work, then what I need is actually something to drink. I need something to quench my thirst, so what better excuse than to have some cider. This cider is something I have obviously had for some time, as it is probably at least 2 years old (if not 3!), but it has finally had its chance to fufill its destiny to be drunk.

This is a vintage cider from Thatchers, which apparently uses the best of the 2009 crop of apples. On the label it mentions it is ‘Matured in oak vats, this fresh, softly-rounded, medium dry cider is light gold in colour with a touch of sparkle and a fruity floral aroma’. So it sounds like your typical vintage style cider that you get from the big boys in the cider game, but can it stand out from the crowd and be a top notch cider you would gladly have in your collection?

This poured with a huge white foamy head and took a little while to settle down. It did settle down after a while, but it certainly was very happy to see me and just wanted to jump out of the bottle! This smelt like it had fairly sweet apples in this, but you could also sense a woody oaky smell in the air too. Onto the taste now, which I have to say it starts fairly sweet like a Thatchers Gold, but then light tannins kick in with a mild sour/sharp taste. There’s also a touch of bitterness, which is complimented with some dry and oakiness in the aftertaste. This feels a fairly easy drinking cider, but it is just not the most exciting in the world and I can’t say it would be up there with the best of them. It’s another cider that might have been better to taste when it is still to really appreciate this. Overall, it’s certainly fairly drinkable but just uninspiring.

Would I buy this again?: Possibly
Overall Rating: 6.5/10

I love thatchers vintage and I honestly think that Thatchers is the best tasting and best made cider in the world, and am impressed with every single glass!

It’s one of the better mass produced ciders, but there is better smaller craft cider makers out there. You should explore and I’m pretty certain you will love what you find 🙂
