It’s been well over a week since my Herefordshire cider trip and I have more cider left than I can shake a stick at! Not that I can ever complain about that of course. It’s always best to have too much than not enough is what I say. Next up to review is the Dabinett, Kingston Black & Yarlington Mill cider from Gregg’s Pit.

Gregg’s Pit are a fairly small-scale producer, which has been run by James Marsden since 1993, with their 20th anniversary being celebrated next year. This is more of a hobby than a full-time job for the guys behind it, but that doesn’t mean the quality is any less of course. If anything, it is probably higher, as love and care is taken at every stage of the process and it is not a conveyor belt system that is seen in the bigger producers, where it’s just a faceless operation really. Gregg’s Pit are probably more well-known for their perries, than their ciders, but they do produce a fair amount of each (2500 litres perry/1500 litres cider)

Anyway, as i mentioned before, first up today is the Dabinett, Kingston Black & Yarlington Mill cider. It is what it says on the tin and is a full juice cider, which are from apples either at their own orchard or from nearby. It’s pressed in a wooden press and stored in aluminium tanks to ferment. All in all, it’s a small-scale but efficient setup they have down there. The 3 cider apples involved within this one are probably my favourite for a Single-Variety cider, so I have high hopes for this one.

I’ve just poured some of the cider now and the apple smell was just trying to burst out of the bottle. The aroma is very farmhouse like, but it’s deep and beautiful too. Onto the taste and I have to say it’s just divine. You get a good burst of apple sweetness, which is followed up with tartness and has a very smooth but sexy end to it. The tannin levels are great, it’s not too sour, has mild acidity and a good edge of bitterness/dryness about it. This one is just so simple to like, but complex at the same time, with a lovely long lingering taste. It’s certainly up there with my favourite ones. It’s not as acidic and rough as I usually go for, but it’s probably one of my favourite Herefordshire ciders. The combination of apples just seems to work very well in my opinion and makes a great cider.
