The cider shelf is finally looking bare again 😦 I’m down to just the 3 new ciders to try now and therefore my choices are limited, but I go through the usual random approach and I have now chosen. Tonight I will be having the Pips Sweet Cider.

This is the 3rd Pips cider I’ve tried and the final one to complete the set. The Medium was really good, the Dry wasn’t bad and now I finally get to try their sweet. I’ve actually had decent experiences lately with the sweeter ciders. As long as the sweet ciders are not overly sickly, then they can be very tasty.

If you’ve seen one Pips Cider bottle, then you have seen them all. It’s a 750ml bottle, which looks fairly classy and is more for the dinner table, than the pub. The cider is made from 7 different apples grown on their own farm, which include both bittersweet and bittersharp apples, so hopefully this feels fairly well-balanced between the 2.

This poured a beautifully golden/amber colour and had a little bit of sparkle about it, though that is very minor and barely noticeable. As I bring the cider closer to me I begin to smell a lovely sweet apple aroma, which has a light toffee feel about it too. Right, it’s time to have that first sip and see what it’s all about!

My initial impression of this cider is it’s sweet, smooth and very fruity to begin with, but then you feel some acidity, tannins and dryness towards the end of the mouthful. The aftertaste does linger fairly well and there’s a faint wood touch to it, with a little bit of bitterness too. For me, the sweetness is a bit too much for my normal palate. It seems to overtake the taste that is trying to fight through, which is a shame really. Having had the Medium previously, I can see what its full potential would look like and that one is my Pips Cider of choice for sure. If you like your cider sweet, then give this a go and it could be just what you are after.

Would I buy this again?: Probably but prefer their Medium.
Overall Rating: 7/10
