I’m now into the final few days before my 30th and therefore trying to get a few more reviews in before the year is up. It’s been an eventful and fun year and time to seal it with a bang. Up next tonight is a Single Variety (SV) cider from Cadogan in the shape of their Dabinett.

I’ve had a good few bottles from Cadogan now and in general the quality of their cider has been pretty damn good. It’s not the best I’ve ever had, though it’s certainly there or thereabouts. Like with their other ciders, the Dabinett is made from mature trees in their orchard, traditionally pressed and then left to mature in oak casks. All in all it sounds like a good process to have, though like their others the ABV is fairly low at only 5.5%. Not that it’s a bad thing, it’s just a cider is naturally higher in ABV. It would be interesting to see what method they used to get the % down. Right, it’s that time again……It’s cider drinking time!

This poured with a good deal of sparkle, which settled fairly quickly, a bright amber/gold colour and has the aroma of lightly rustic apples. The smell was bold and exactly like the dabinett apple I know and love. I take in my first sip and whilst it was sweet initially, this turned a lot drier as the sip went on. It’s beautifully bittersweet in taste, well balanced and has a tasty oak finish. It’s not a finish with an overpowering oak taste, but just enough to get the tastebuds going. There’s also a bit of acidity/tanginess going on, some bitter undertones and good levels of tannins overall that hits you. It’s definitely one of the nicest Dabinett (SV) ciders I’ve had in a while and would happily have another if given the chance. Compared to some Dabinett ciders it is a little more sweeter, but at the same time still tasty.

Would I buy this again?: Yes
