During Apple Day, apart from the pressing itself, there will be plenty of stalls to enjoy with apple and other rural themes e.g. Basketry, Spinning, Woolcraft, Hedge laying, Wood-turning, Owls, Pigs, West Sussex Rangers & their Nature quiz, Hanging baskets, Toffee apples, Apple Tombola, Homemade cakes, Locally made cheese “Sussex Charmer”, Local Firebird Brewery Raffle prize, chutneys, jams and other comestibles, plus a Raffle and Morris Dancing.  There will also be (messy!) apple games, face painting and races for children.  Our 2013 vintage “Old Chopper”, “Strumpet” and “The Doctor” Ciders will be on  sale (strictly over 18 only – ID will be requested) as well as our limited edition “Vinegar Witch” Cider vinegar – an excellent Christmas present!  The Community Centre will be open for refreshments, burgers, sausages, chips and there will be a Hog Roast as well as Carribbean food!

We will not be taking apples on Apple Day itselfPlease bring your apples to the hopper by the RSCC  by 5pm Saturday 11th October, the day before Apple Day.  The hopper will be there from 27th September.

We hope that as many villagers as possible will walk down, thus alleviating the pressure on demand for parking – the car park will be reserved for stall holders and disabled access, in the first instance. There will be other car parking available and a local committee will be manning this – please follow their directions.

The Apple Day Launch Cider and Cheese party on Friday 3rd October 8pm at the RSCC is an open event – to which you are all invited, but let us know by 1st October if you are coming so we know numbers for catering.

We do need to know how many volunteers can help with Apple Picking and on Apple Day itself, so please let us know now.  Your help, particularly with Apple Picking, makes this a truly village initiative which, so far, has contributed over £5000 back into the village to the Youth Club, Scouts, Junior Football, Book Exchange, Help for Heroes, Pre-School, the purchase of 5 defibrillators and to CHASE and Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospices.

We cannot provide Apple Picking help in the village orchards without more volunteers – that means you!

We would ask that all clubs/schools that have benefited from donations from ORCS – of hope to in the future, provide their own teams/rotas to help pick over that weekend.  Unfortunately quite a lot of apple picking requires adult muscle in addition to supervision, so if you want your child’s school or club to benefit from the funds generated by ORCS  it will be you that needs to help for at least half a day to make it worthwhile, not just sending along your child.

This year we are asking that, as far as possible, you pick your own apples and drop them down to the hopper by the RSCC by 4pm Saturday 11th Oct, the day before Apple Day.  The hopper will be available for the two weeks running up to Apple Day.  We can drop off rubble bags in the village for you to pick your own and we will collect them, if you are unable to transport yourselves.  Apple picking on Saturday and Sunday morning is at identified orchards and gardens in the village; on Saturday 4th Oct starting at 10am we will be moving down through the village. Please join us if you can.  If you are able to help with other picking during the fortnight preceding Apple Day, please contact us.

If you would like to assist with the apple washing, scratting and pressing on Apple Day you will need to contact us to sign up to the rota by the 30th September. Call us or send an email to the website. If you would be prepared to make some Toffee Apples please call 823781 as soon as you have read this article!

We look forward to seeing you at the various events running up to and including Apple Day.

Do get in touch. We look forward to seeing you soon.
