24th January – Wassailing with Barnes and Adams 2015 (Nibley, Gloucestershire) Preview

Event Information: We will be holding this years Wassail on Saturday 24th of January in the orchard at Nibley House – thanks again to Walter Eley and Family. Please arrive at 4.00pm for mulled cider and the ceremony will start at 5.00pm

We are looking for an Apple Queen to take part in the ceremony. Traditionally this is a young maiden but if any one of any age (or sex!) would like to volunteer then please email matt@barnesandadams.com

Anyone is welcome and all you need to bring along is
• Sensible clothes for a cold, possibly wet winters day in a field.
• Something to make a loud noise. Drum, pots and pans, bells, whistles, rattles, etc) to frighten away any evil spirits.
• Cups/mugs
• Lanterns or torch.
• Home made bread, lovingly made. – no sliced bread, please. We don’t need loads but if you like making bread we would love to have a loaf.

Order of events
• Congregate in the orchard. Morris dancing and songs Mulled Cider and apple nibbles.
• Candle lit procession around the orchard. Led by Green Man and Apple Queen.
• Light the fire
• Arrive at designated tree. Ceremony.
• Food for the birds. Toast bread, dunk in cider and place into the bows of any apple tree to encourage beneficial birds, such as the Blue Tit* (custodian of the orchard).
• Mulled cider, fire & music
• Depart

*Blue Tits naturally help to keep pest and disease to a minimum as they are brilliant at unfurling leaves and picking out the grubs that cause this.

After the Wassail The Salutation Inn, Ham, Nr Berkeley welcomes everyone to carry on the party with more live folk music and plenty of B&A Cider.

Simply park on the main road near North Nibley Church and school, walk through the farmyard and you will see the orchard on your right. Hope to see you there and please bring some dry weather!
