Whilst on my latest trip to see the family in Bath, I thought I’d combine it with a nice meal out and a pub that serves real cider. That’s like hitting 3 birds with 1 stone surely and something that I thought had to be possible. Then a bit of inspiration hit me and I remembered the Packhorse Inn had mentioned on Twitter that I should pop along to try the Honey’s Midford cider and bam a plan was hatched.
The pub itself is just on the outskirts of the main city of Bath in an area called Southstoke. Unless you know it is there, then it’s not something you would naturally stumble upon, but thankfully we had directions and knew exactly where we were going! After we went through the sheer excitement of parking on a winding little road we popped on in to see what it was all about.
I would describe this pub as having a nice rustic country pub vibe to it and very friendly and accommodating (they were even happy to allow my 3 year old nephew in!). We were over half an hour early before our booking, but they happily kicked some of the regulars out of our place, which was nice of them. The selection of cider I found to be fairly generous, though not a huge amount away from the big players. It was a fairly Westons/Thatchers affair, but it was good they had a local cider in the Honey’s Midford. I always like to see local pubs supporting their local producers, as it gives that community spirit you see lacking a lot nowadays.
Naturally I ordered the Midford and I have to say it was well worth the trip for that alone. If you ever get a chance to try it, then you should take that opportunity as you will not be disappointed! For my meal I went for the Venison steak with chips and followed that up with a lovely fruit crumble and ice cream. I’m no foodie that can describe that meal in any great detail, but everyone was happy with what they ordered and you can’t say fairer than that!
Overall if I am in the area again soon then I’d definitely pop in for a pint or 2! Top job guys!

It’s not often I get a chance to go to London, but with having recently changed jobs, I had an opportunity to go this week for my induction. My usual experience of London is the hustle and bustle of the sardine crammed underground and generally just getting from A to B. I haven’t been out in London for anything but business in so long, so this time I had to just change that. Having been up since 5:30am to get on a train to London, I was in no rush to go back on the earlier trains to stand all the way home in rush hour. So where else is better to go to miss all the traffic than a pub?!?

Having been notified of it’s re-opening, by a friend who works nearby, I had to pop on down to see what was happening. This is the latest venture by the people behind The Orchard. With them being one of Bristol’s best cider pubs, then this had to be good for cider right?

Previously, when it was the Ashley Arms, I heard bad things about it and avoided it at all costs. It’s just off the Gloucester Road, near the cricket ground, and unless you knew it existed, then you wouldn’t necessarily stumble upon it.

This is the sister pub of the Golden Lion, set in the heart of the city centre on King Street. The main focus for this pub is the jazz, which becomes quite obvious when you step in, with loads of jazz posters everywhere! It’s famous for having many free live jazz/blues nights and a yearly jazz festival.
