Having been notified of it’s re-opening, by a friend who works nearby, I had to pop on down to see what was happening. This is the latest venture by the people behind The Orchard. With them being one of Bristol’s best cider pubs, then this had to be good for cider right?

Previously, when it was the Ashley Arms, I heard bad things about it and avoided it at all costs. It’s just off the Gloucester Road, near the cricket ground, and unless you knew it existed, then you wouldn’t necessarily stumble upon it.

This is the sister pub of the Golden Lion, set in the heart of the city centre on King Street. The main focus for this pub is the jazz, which becomes quite obvious when you step in, with loads of jazz posters everywhere! It’s famous for having many free live jazz/blues nights and a yearly jazz festival.

With the latest ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film now on our screens featuring a Bristolian pirate, Blackbeard, what better way to celebrate this than to go to the pub that apparently Blackbeard drank in.

Review

When my friend recently brought up The Orchard in conversation, I just had to go down and see it again. It’s a little like an old friend for me, that isn’t quite local enough I can easily walk to visit, but I feel guilty I don’t see enough of because they are so close. Luckily as my other half is a perennial taxi user, it wasn’t to be the usual long journey to the other side of the river, but a nice short taxi ride.

Review

When everyone thinks of Bristol cider pubs, the first one always on their mind is the Cori Tap. Dating back to the 1800s, this cider pub is what really put Bristol on the cider map. Its reputation is such that even the rich and famous frequent there on occasion and go and get “corried”. One of the biggest things it is known for is its lethal Exhibition cider. At 8.4% and only served in half-pints, then you can understand why it can become dangerous drinking it.

Review

A proper Bristol cider pub, centrally located in the heart of the city, just off Kings Street. Well when I say a pub, I really mean a boat, with the bar spread over both decks with ample outside seating docked on the river. With the selection of cider on tap and bottled, then you are really spoilt for choice. If I was to choose somewhere to wind away those long Saturday afternoons then this would be it.
