Royal Oak (Bristol) Cider Festival 2011 Review

Address: The Royal Oak, 385 Gloucester Road, Horfield, Bristol, BS7 8TN

Date: 22nd-23rd July 2011

Date Visted: 23rd July

Review:

Having heard great things from friends who visited the festival last year, I then made it my mission to visit it this year. The festival is all about the pork, music and most importantly the cider. How can you not like a festival that has all that goodness involved?

The festival started on the Friday night, which was free entrance and their ‘warm up’ session, but I opted for the Saturday session. This was mainly due to having prior commitments on the Friday, but I was also gambling on having a cider festival in the sun, rather than a low key one on the Friday! Luckily it did not disappoint and the sun was out for all to see and it was a beautiful day.

Having been notified of it’s re-opening, by a friend who works nearby, I had to pop on down to see what was happening. This is the latest venture by the people behind The Orchard. With them being one of Bristol’s best cider pubs, then this had to be good for cider right?

Review

When everyone thinks of Bristol cider pubs, the first one always on their mind is the Cori Tap. Dating back to the 1800s, this cider pub is what really put Bristol on the cider map. Its reputation is such that even the rich and famous frequent there on occasion and go and get “corried”. One of the biggest things it is known for is its lethal Exhibition cider. At 8.4% and only served in half-pints, then you can understand why it can become dangerous drinking it.

Walking down from the top of Gloucester Road, all you can see from a distance is the crazy artwork outside the Golden Lion. Walk inside and you see a traditional pub, which loves hosting local gigs throughout the week. Although only serving Thatchers & Westons cider, I do love starting a sunny Saturday afternoon on the benches outside before venturing towards the bright lights of the city centre. A true hidden gem in the heart of Kingsdown. This is a small and cosy pub, but still has the charm of a drinking hole from back in the day. At around £2.10 per pint, it still has the prices from back then too! This is quickly becoming one of my favourite locals. The bizarre thing about this place is the outside toilets with the amazing mural all over it. Not one I want to brave on this cold winter nights! Read the rest of this entry »
