The Penny Farthing (Bristol) Traditional Cider Weekend 2011 Review

Date Visted: 31st July

Review:

To end my July, and a heavy weekend of cider, I felt like something a bit more chilled and low key. So where better to go than my local pub, after all it is only 5 mins from my house and something I could easily crawl back and forth to. So off I went to the pub, where it was a decorated with union jacks above the bar and plenty of polypins lined up, just begging to be bought. The day was fairly quiet and thankfully there was some footie on the big screen to keep me entertained.

The ciders on tap were a fair few for just a local pub festival, though it was pretty standard stuff, with the majority all from Thatchers, Broadoak and Westons. Having been all Broadoak’d out the previous week, I stood by my Westons today and went for the Westons Traditional Scrumpy. It’s not a new cider for the pub, as it is sold their regularly, but it was just what I needed.

After 2 or 3 pints and having finished watching the footie (and seeing Arsenal draw again! Woo!), I set off for a quiet evening at the Grain Barge to chill by the river.

Going on a Sunday probably wasn’t giving the festival a fair chance to see how it lived up in busier periods, but I liked what I saw. This was just a no nonsense chilled festival. Good times!

Located at the bottom of Cheltenham Road we have the Pipe and Slippers. You step into the place and it has a real chilled feel about it with its array of leather chairs and wooden décor that gives it a homely feel. The only problem with the place is that does become popular at the weekend, which means it can get too packed. It does serve a good pint of cider (Orchard Pig being my favourite there) and I would keep coming back for that alone. Read the rest of this entry »

Situated on the corner of Cotham Hill & Whiteladies Road, is the The Penny Farthing. Once the site of an old bank, there is consequently a convenient ATM on the corner of the building! The Penny Farthing is a lovely local pub (sadly, you don’t get many on the trendy bar-infested Whiteladies Road), run by Wadsworth. Read the rest of this entry »
